    The original doily was tatted, a form of tiny tiny knitting, and they were used to protect the backs and arms of chairs from being soiled by hair oils and hands. They evolved over time into the paper version which of course is only useful for making snow flakes to hang in the window and hearts for Valentines Day cards.

    There were doilies on furniture when I was a kid. They make great flying saucers. As do pancakes. Don’t get caught.
